Arda Ocal, ESPN - XLIVE Interview Series | 2019 XLIVE Esports Summit

XLIVE caught up with Arda Ocal of ESPN and the NHL Gaming World Championships, on the roof of the Ace Hotel from the 2019 XLIVE Esports Summit in Los Angeles. Watch the full conversation below.

Kye Browning coming to you live on the rooftop of the Ace Hotel at the 2019 XLIVE Esports Summit. Joined with me is a good friend, Arda Ocal, how are you doing?

I'm great man. Thanks for having me. You and I had been working together for a long time, but it's nice to finally do something on camera together.

We've never done an interview on camera before.

No, this is the very first. History is being made right now.

Three years we've been working together. First time this has been captured on camera. We're glad you're here.

Thank you.

Tell us a little bit about what you do. We were joking off camera, you're the voice of esports, the king of broadcast, tell us a little bit about what you do, where have you been most recently, and what you've been up to?

June has been very busy. We did the finals of the NHL Gaming World Championship. That was season two at the HyperX Esports arena in Vegas. I stayed in Vegas to do a triple crown royal event for Newegg and CLG. That was a Fortnite, Apex Legends & PUBG merged event with professionals from CLG, which was a ton of fun, and then XLIVE. Like you said, I've been doing XLIVE for several years now, moderating panels, and this year we're actually doing a live podcast with The Business of Esports, a podcast I do with William Collis and Paul Dawalibi. And also we brought the head of ESPN esports, and a very well respected talent manager to to put together a panel on getting press in esports. I'm really looking forward to that.

Yeah. Actually I think this is the year you've been the most involved as far as panels are concerned, so thank you for that. You've been here pretty much since the inception of the XLIVE Esports Summit, right? What are you hoping to get out of this year's event?

I love networking. I'm a big fan of like events like this. I just love meeting people and hearing their stories. I'm a big proponent of leaving people better than when you found them. So I love to hear about people's dreams and also what they're working on. And then in my mind I'm thinking, okay, how can I help this person or who can help this person if I can't directly. And then I just make a connection and I moonwalk out of there. And sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. But at the end of the day, the intention is there, right? It's always good vibes and positive thoughts. And with XLIVE, you guys have a really good team. I mean starting with you, Kye, you guys really bring together a lot of prominent people in the esports industry, in particular with the summit, but also just a lot of great minds. So out here at the networking reception you have a lot of great discussions, for example, and that's why I like to be a part of it.

Awesome. One last question for you. What games are you playing today? I know you're a man of travel, you've been on the road this month, but what are you playing in your downtime?

I'll play any game that I'm about to cast. So, for example, I was playing a lot of Fortnite, Apex Legends, and PUBG leading up to the triple crown royal event. But if I'm not preparing anything for work, Tetris '99 for sure. What I like to do is play Tetris '99 while listening to either an audio book or podcast.

Tetris 99 is like mindless, like, I'm just playing a bunch of games, maybe an hour or two and I'm listening to podcasts or audio books. I'm also playing master mode of Breath of the Wild, which is very difficult.

I actually just flew to Singapore, and I got Breath of the Wild for the 24 hour flight.

Isn't it the best?

Yeah, it's a really great game. I love it. I don't play RPGs very often, but that game is beautiful. So I haven't beat it yet, but once I beat it, I'll do master mode. For those who want to follow you on social media, where can they follow you?

You can find me on Twitter, Instagram, basically everywhere @ArdaOcalTV, you also find me on LinkedIn. I like to post everything that I'm up to so you can keep up with me on social media.

Awesome. Thank you so much. We'll catch you on the next one.
