The Washington Capitals Just Signed the NHL's First Esports Pro

As part of a leaguewide effort to grow NHL esports, the Capitals on Tuesday announced the creation of Caps Gaming and the signing of pro gamer John “JohnWayne” Casagranda, who will serve as an official ambassador of the new brand.

Casagranda was the runner-up at the second annual NHL Gaming World Championship in June and, according to Monumental Sports and Entertainment, is the first esports pro signed by an NHL organization.

 

Fanduel, New Jersey casinos taking esports bets

Gamblers in New Jersey now can bet on competitive esports at casinos and racetracks, while FanDuel on Friday announced it is the first online sportsbook in the U.S. to take esports betting.

The first competition listed on FanDuel is the League of Legends World Championship final, to be held Sunday in Paris between G2 Esports and Funplus Phoenix. The winning team will receive 37.5% of the prize pool, which will be at least $2.225 million. The runner-up will take home 13.5% of the pool.
